Abstract

Design and output characteristics are reported for sealed-off self-heated miniature hollow-cathode laser tubes (active volume 2-3 mm ID * 60-75 mm long) operating on the blue (441.6 nm) and green (533.7/537.8 nm) transitions of Cd+ and blue-green (491.2/492.4 nm) and near-infrared (747.9 and 758.8 nm) transitions of Zn+ at milliwatt power levels. Continuous operating lifetimes of 1000 h have been observed for the He-Cd system. Technical problems involved in achieving long operating lifetimes are discussed.
