Abstract
This chapter considers the specific governance challenges that face developing countries in implementing sustainable development objectives through policy and law. After exploring the integration of sustainable development, as a concept, into domestic laws and trends in sustainable development policy practice that seeks to value the contribution of ecosystem services, this chapter will then consider how existing governance structures serve these objectives in developing country contexts. Environmental and sustainable development decisions can no longer be made in a ‘siloed,’ discrete decision-making process; instead, as this chapter will demonstrate, more integrated approaches with a high degree of coordination and collaboration are required. This can enable decision makers to execute more informed policy design incorporating environmental accounting and quantifying the benefits associated with ecosystem services into the decision-making process.
