Abstract
The utilization and integration of renewable energy sources (RES), called distributed energy resources (DERs), have advanced significantly within the framework of power system design, especially in a microgrid. Some of RESs like photovoltaic (PV), wind, waves, and tides are naturally intermittent. Therefore, battery energy storage system (BESS) is needed in the microgrid system to minimize power fluctuations and improve power quality. In this paper, protection and control strategy for BESS in DC microgrid are presented. First, the protection of BESS by coordinating the current-time curve of each BESS protection device is presented. Protection devices are modelled by using a solid-state DC circuit breaker. Then, a droop control method with voltage restoration is implemented in BESS to maintain the DC microgrid bus voltage at 500 Vdc. Finally, the simulation results verify that the proposed protection coordination with droop control and voltage restoration works robustly by maintaining constant DC bus voltage despite the fluctuation of the load. This paper focuses on the protection and control of BESS in the LV DC microgrid.
