Abstract

This chapter provides a systematic review of the literature pertaining to qualitative research in finance. Since the early 2000s, scholars have been engaged in research to better understand how to employ qualitative methods in finance research. By conducting a state-of-the-art literature review, we identify the 47 most influential publications in the field that have developed into four distinct groups. We review each of these to identify the main contributions in these research areas. Five key emerging research trends are outlined which highlight possible pathways for innovative research.
