    Abstract

A calculation is performed of the quantum noise penalty which is incurred due to nearest-neighbour inter-element coupling in laser diode arrays. The use of suitable assumptions allows the derivation of a simple closed-form expression which allows quantification of the noise penalty as a function of the strength of the inter-element coupling. The opportunity for fabricating optimised low-noise optical pumps based on laser diode arrays is identified.
