Abstract
'Queenie Gives an Address', devised and performed by Julie-Anne Long was commissioned by Performance Space for Liveworks Festival of Experimental Art, live streamed 21 October 2021.
As part of The Invisiblists, women of a certain age whose invisibility in the eyes of society-at-large is both a curse and a superpower, Queenie infiltrated the Festival’s spaces in a series of intriguing performance vignettes. Creating subtle magic, awkward moments and fleeting encounters, she invited us to question the way we think about ourselves and the people around us.
'Queenie Gives An Address' contributes to my ongoing research focusing on female representation in live performance. This solo performance work, where I am the performer, involves strategies for contemporary performance research and representation innovation, propelled by research questions: Who is the subject? How do I where the medium for the narrative is the body of the performer and her spoken voice, perform the subject and the narrative? In this case, with regard to writing for my own idiosyncratic spoken voice, the subject was in part autobiographical in content, whilst being performed by a larger than life persona, that was and was not me.
