Abstract
Visible C2 and CH sidelight emission in a CO-He-Xe laser discharge exhibits intensity fluctuations of typically 30-40% when laser oscillation is chopped on and off. Chemical reactions in the discharge plasma are shown to play the major role in the perturbations of the C2 Swan and high-pressure bands and the CH 4300 AA bands. The dissociation of CO is shown to take place in the reaction of CO (a 3 Pi r) metastables and ground-state CO, and via the reaction of two vibrationally excited ground-state CO molecules, rather than via direct electron impact.
