Abstract

System evaluation for design often involves averages derived by sampling over the pupil. Novel general-purpose sampling and weighting schemes are discussed and it is then shown that optical design calls for tailored versions. It turns out that Gaussian quadrature, long recognized for efficiency, requires about 30% more ray tracing to attain comparable accuracy to the new schemes.
