Resources and activities are two sides of the same coin: duality of the activities - and resource-based views of strategic management

Abstract

From a strategic perspective, firms are engaged inevitably in choices, as they seek to make themselves distinctive, either in terms of their activities (competitive forces view) or in terms of resources. In this paper, the two perspectives are combined, so that they generate dual, or complementary, views of the firm, and complementary views of the strategizing process. These views can be linked to a third, namely a view of the firm as a bundle of routines, which embody the firm’s competences, or dynamic capabilities. Strategizing can fruitfully be viewed as choices made by the firm in terms of its constituent resources, activities and routines, and formulated in a general setting of disequilibrium.
