Robust adaptive sliding mode excitation controller design with external disturbances for synchronous generators

Abstract

This paper proposes a nonlinear excitation controller for synchronous generators (SGs) for enhancing the transient and steady-state stabilities of single machine infinite bus (SMIB) systems. A robust adaptive sliding mode control theory is used to design the proposed excitation controller. In this work, a fifth-order dynamical model along with an automatic voltage regulator (AVR) model is considered to improve the steady-state voltage tracking error and transient stability. As parameter variations and external disturbances could not be avoided in a power system, these effects are also considered to prove the robustness of the proposed excitation controller. In this work, parameter variations are considered as unknown terms and these are estimated using adaptation formulas while external uncertainties are bounded by known constants. A Lyapunov function is used to prove the overall stability of the power system. Finally, simulation studies are presented to verify the effectiveness of the proposed excitation controller under various contingencies. To prove the superiority of the proposed controller, a comparison simulation result is also presented. Contribution-The main contribution of this paper is to design a new hybrid excitation controller using robust adaptive backstepping and integral sliding mode approaches.
