Abstract
An ion-exchanged Cu/SiO2 with high activity for the gas phase hydrogenation of C4-acetylenes has been investigated. It has a very low tendency for overhydrogenation to n-butane, or for butene isomerisation, but there is significant acetylene oligomerisation. This tendency is lower at elevated temperature and if high concentrations of butenes and hydrogen are present. The catalyst can be used for the removal of acetylenes from an industrial C4 stream, but butadiene will be hydrogenated as well if not removed separately.
