Abstract

The study deconstructs socioemotional wealth (SEW) into its restricted (SEWr) and extended (SEWe) forms while unpacking the mechanisms through which these forms trickle-down to influence group-level unethical pro-organizational behavior (UPB) in family firms. We hypothesize that compared to SEWe, SEWr promotes psychological entitlement among family business leaders, driving them to commit UPB. Drawing on social learning theory, we further predict that family firm leaders’ engagement in UPB increases the likelihood that their subordinates will also engage in group-level UPB. We find support for these predictions, except for the trickle-down effects of SEWe. Theoretical and practice implications are discussed.
