Abstract

Specific phobias are one of the most common mental health conditions. They are associated with substantial impairment in functioning and if left untreated tend to have an unremitting course leading to life long suffering. In this article, we discuss the clinical phenomenology and etiology of the phobias and then describe current evidence-based approaches to assessing and treating this disorder across the lifespan.
