Abstract

This paper studies the stability of a third-order one-bit sigma-delta modulator (ΣΔM) using the describing function method in which both the amplitude and phase shift of a sampled quantiser are modelled. By the determination of the stable operating regions, the sigma-delta modulator can be designed to have optimised performance and less occurrence of instability. The approach used in this paper allows for the design and stability analysis of higher-order ΣΔMs.
