    Abstract

A review is given on the properties of statistical reconstructions and some emerging approaches. Topics discussed are as follows: SV-EM and Simultaneous Multiplicative (SMART) algorithms as general solutions for linear systems; emission and transmission models for medical imaging; known results for consistent and inconsistent linear systems; and new developments. Further, the simplicity and generality of algebraic approaches to iterative solution are demonstrated in recent applications that include reconstruction with dual-energy emitters and the use of uncoupled EM-PIRA for reconstructing dynamically changing sequences of projection images.
