Abstract
Deakin University was commissioned by the Victorian Government Department of Jobs, Skills, Industry and Regions to undertake action research to understand:
• The experiences and stories of local First Nations peoples, communities and stakeholders within Djilang’s (Geelong in Wadawurrung language) employment and skills ecosystem
• The barriers, challenges, opportunities, what is working and what needs to change
The study took place during 2022 and 2023 on Wadawurrung Country, specifically the Greater Geelong region. An action research approach was adopted with the aim to generate improvements to the employment pathways opportunities for community. The action research was one of four components under the ‘Geelong Aboriginal Employment Partnership Initiative’ that focusses on developing a culturally safe employment model for Djilang’s First Nations job seekers. The ‘Geelong Aboriginal Employment Partnership initiative’ was progressed following ministerial approval by the Minister for Employment in May 2022.
