Abstract
The mathematical basis of couple-mode optical filter analysis and design was presented. The responses of the rejected and transmitted components of birefringent filter or the responses of the forward and backward components of thin film filter can be derived using their transfer-matrix as z-polynomials. It was shown that the same couple-mode formalism can be used to analyze both birefringent and thin film filters.
