Abstract

Emballonura furax is known only from eight specimens collected in the southern foothills of the New Guinean Central Cordillera, from the Kapari River, Irian Jaya in the west, to Putei, Gulf Province, Papua New Guinea, in the east. Specimens from New Ireland previously assigned to this species by Smith and Hood (1981) are described here as a new species, E. serii. which is found only in northern New Ireland. Emballonura dianae can be divided into three discrete subspecies. The nominotypical form is the smallest, and inhabits Rennell, Guadalcanal and Malaita in the southern Solomon Islands. Emballonura d. rickwoodi n. ssp. is known from Santa Isabel in the central Solomon Islands and possibly New Ireland in the Bismarck Archipelago. Emballonura d. fruhstotferi n. ssp. is known only from two localities in the southern foothills of the New Guinean Central Cordillera, where it is sympatric with E. furax.
