Taming the interaction jungle: embodiment is all you need

Abstract

Conversational interfaces have grown in popularity in recent years, thanks in large part to improvements to the underlying technology that drives them, a large and growing number of capabilities and an aggressive marketing effort by several large technology companies. Despite these advances, usage of conversational interfaces is low compared to competing interaction modalities, most notably smartphones and desktop computing. What is missing is a frank and detailed discussion of the embodiment of these interfaces from the get-go, rather than designers applying embodiment conservatively to their conversational interfaces as an afterthought. The potential benefits of embracing an embodiment first strategy to designing CUIs include improving the discoverability, memorability and enjoyment in using them.
