    Abstract

Approaches to jazz composition in the context of a small ensemble have often drawn upon the pentatonic scale as melodic source material. This allows for the creation of singable, folk-like melodies and challenging the composer to create interest in the harmonic and/or rhythmic structure of a composition. This project generated new knowledge through the process-driven realisation of the ways in which the major/minor modulation and non-diatonic harmonic information can be used to broaden the harmonic choices offered by a purely diatonic approach.
