Abstract

During the past decade, the Australian ELICOS industry has embraced direct entry into tertiary studies programs in response to students' needs and preferences. The rapid growth that this EAP area continues to experience creates an increasing demand for teachers with the required skills to teach on such programs. This article discusses the skills that are needed to be an effective teacher in Direct Entry Programs. It also reports on the answers provided by experienced teachers to a survey that looked to uncover not only their awareness of those skills but also their recommendations as to the kind of support that can be provided by Directors of Studies, Head Teachers and Coordinators. Finally, the article identifies additional skills and areas for management support.
