Abstract

Internationally, there is increasing investment in medication-related technologies designed to improve the safety and appropriateness of medication therapy. This chapter will discuss a range of technologies designed to support the safe and efficient administration of medications to patients in hospitals and in care or nursing home settings. The introduction of individual technologies may each produce benefits, yet increasingly, evidence indicates that technological interventions that are integrated and support a closed-loop medication process will produce the greatest reductions in medication errors and harm.
