Tectonics: Ildiko Kovacs

This exhibition ('Tectonics: Ildiko Kovacs', Macquarie University Art Gallery, 26 February – 17 April 2026) reveals both the conscious and unconscious artisanal processes of Kovacs’ ongoing artistic practice.

The energetic, spiralling fluid flow of vivacious lines, competing colours and deeply tactile textures articulate the explosive ‘push-pull’ layered, tectonic tensions at play, upon, through, and within Kovacs’ visual explorations of the physical and metaphysical. Surface and underpainting are contested fields moving, contorting and amplifying the picture plane’s shifts into a sustained coherent dynamism.

Tectonics is all-encompassing, it embraces the forces of nature that shape our world. It is about mountain building, crustal deformation, earthquakes and volcanism, Country in slow motion, the physics of the Earth’s crust and much more. Through Kovacs’ powerful works we see glimpses of these tectonic phases, she gives us an insight into the deeper forces moving slowly, imperceptibly but unrelentingly towards new configurations both physical and metaphysical. Her works capture change, movement, reconfigurations on a planetary scale in her unique form of earthly documentation. Tectonics also captures periods of stasis and quiescence between upheaval and rupture. Tectonics governs climate and habitability. Kovacs’ work captures the need to live with and accept uncertainty, things that lie beyond our control or even comprehension, forces that are undeniable, emergent and ever present – our fragility in a dynamic universe.

Understanding the origins of these forces through Kovacs’ art enriches our sense of place and connection to place. These qualities mirror the psychological, social, and historical undercurrents that shape human lives. These unique, visually compelling works reveal an artist who is both explorer and storyteller.
