Abstract
The issue of changes in the use of cases and prepositional phrases in the Russian language has attracted considerable attention in recent years. In this article, the review of factors influencing such changes involved studying analytic tendencies in Russian, transformations in the semantics of words that govern cases and prepositions, as well as the impact of the syntactic patterns of synonyms and near synonyms. The article also examines the role of conceptual metaphors in semantic shifts and polysemy development of cases and prepositional phrases. According to the research in cognitive semantics, the formation of a new meaning of a case or a prepositional phrase is often based on a conceptual metaphor. The productivity or unproductivity of a conceptual metaphor in the language affects the development of new meanings, as well as the weakening or even disappearance of the existing meanings of cases and prepositional phrases.
