Abstract
The secondary subject of English offers a unique context to embed Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives for the benefit of all students through the availability and variety of text choices. Currently, in New South Wales, teachers are mandated to select quality texts that are “widely defined Australian literature, including texts that give insights into Aboriginal experiences in Australia” (NESA, 2019). This poster will present the 2021 questionnaire findings on selecting texts to teach Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives in the English classroom. This will focus on interrogating the role of authorship in the texts teachers are selecting. This knowledge assists to understand the current landscapes, and present future ideas for challenging euro-centric discourses of prioritising non-Indigenous voices to tell Indigenous stories.
