Abstract

The effect of pressure upon the structures of pure and doped BaBiO3 and Bi2Sr2Can-1CunO4+2n (n = 1, 2 and 3) has been studied using energy-dispersive powder diffraction. The lattice parameters of BaBiO3, Ba0.6K0.4BiO3 and BaPb0.75Bi0.25O3 were found to decrease monotonically with pressure. Bi2Sr2CuO6 was found to transform at 39 kbar from the ambient orthorhombic structure to a tetragonal structure. Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 and Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10 were found to transform to non-crystalline phases between 20 and 30 kbar.
