The evidence for three archaic Greek hoards: IGCH 3, 1165 and 1874

    Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

    Abstract

There are relatively few verifiable hoards from the earliest period in the history of ancient Greek coinage. Those that have been identified are then of particular importance. But the evidence for their existence is often sketchy, as is highlighted in this review of the documentation for three archaic Greek hoards: IGCH 3 (Eretria?), 1165 (Asia Minor) and 1874 (Taranto). This brief study seeks to explore some of the difficulties associated with the documentary evidence for their existence. It is an attempt to engage with the legacy of earlier, pioneering scholarship by continuing the process of shifting through the imperfect evidence of modern testimony.
