Abstract
Did Augustus intend to reconstruct the form of government at Rome? In retrospect it has been easy to assume this. Indeed a profound shift in the degree to which politics came to depend upon the patronage of the leading house can clearly be traced in the primary sources. But did this alter what we choose to call the lawful 'constitution' of Rome?
