Abstract
Numerous back-arc, and arc volcanic systems of intra-orogenic tectonic setting occur in and around the Mediterranean Sea. The igneous, back-arc crust of the Tyrrhenian Sea has heterogeneous composition related to diversity of the magma sources. The paper reviews current knowledge of the nature of the ocean floor in this region, based on DSDP and ODP results, an aeromagnetic survey, and analyses of lava samples recovered by the MIR submersible, and outlines specific questions to be addressed by future drilling programs. -G.E.Hodgson
