The initial development and process evaluation of AusPAnet: the Australian Physical Activity Network

ISSUE ADDRESSED: The use of e-technology communication networks is important in 21st century health promotion. One developing example is the Australian Physical Activity Network (AusPAnet), which aims to build knowledge and capacity among the physical activity workforce to inform policy and practice. It fills a communication gap and functions through a fortnightly online e-News, supported by a dedicated website.

METHODS: Process evaluation continually monitors the network and its usage from its launch in August 2006. In addition, an online member survey was electronically distributed in December 2006 to all members at that time (n=1,300).

RESULTS: Registered network membership grew from 777 in August 2006 to almost 2,000 in August 2007, with members from health and non-health sectors. Survey results (n=314 responders) indicated high levels of interest and perceived relevance of the network. However, over time, attrition occurred in the proportions of those registered that viewed material provided by AusPAnet.

CONCLUSION: AusPAnet has demonstrated considerable growth and success over the initial 12 months since its launch. The network reaches large numbers of professionals from various sectors, agencies and geographic areas on a regular (fortnightly) basis.
