The Marinus Link: critical infrastructure for Australia's energy transition

Research output: Contribution to journalComment/opinion

Abstract

This paper focuses on the role of pumped hydro energy storage in a national electricity market that increasingly utilises variable renewable energy for electricity generation. Recognising the need for such projects in Australia, it examines the Battery of the Nation project in Tasmania. It delves into the proposed Marinus Link that would carry electricity across Bass Strait to Victoria, an essential link given the Battery of the Nation project’s need for increased capacity and the unreliability of the BassLink and its current financial and regulatory position. An examination of the Marinus Link traces the history and development of the concept of a second electricity interconnector between Tasmania and Victoria.
