Popular culture has brought us many famous dragons, and some pretty famous dragon-slayers too. But there's been a lesser known worm lurking in the background.

This mythical creature marauded across the English countryside nearly a thousand years ago, and continued to reappear in different guises as the centuries progressed.

In 1940's England it terrorised producer Tom Murray's father. And thereafter began to make unnerving appearances in Tom's own childhood dreams.

Today on The History Listen Tom travels back to the northeast of England to investigate the curious hold this monstrous worm still maintains.
