Abstract

The Observatory of the Upper Adriatic Sea was created in 1984 on the initiative of the littoral regions Presidents members of the "Alpe-Adria Community" to begin common researches and to obtain homogeneous data about the quality of water in the Upper Adriatic Sea. Contextual studies carried out by specialized institutions from Veneto and Friuli-Venezia Giulia and from Slovenian and Croatian Republics gave, for the first time, results based on an international collaboration.
The "alga invasions" during summer 1988 and 1989 improved the role of the Observatory, widening its competences. At the moment the Observatory is the most reliable scientific interlocutor in the debate about the "invasions" and the quality of water, related to the recent decline of tourist economy in the coastal areas of the Upper Adriatic Sea.
