Abstract
This paper investigates the background to the discovery and naming of the Crested Pigeon Ocyphaps lophotes and the Mallee Ringneck Barnardius zonarius barnardi. Examination of the contemporary events, publications, documents and paintings reveals fairly precise localities and dates for the collection of the first specimens of both these taxa.
