The visual process and the clinical assessment of vision

Abstract

To overcome any functional issues that might prevent a student’s full engagement with their school environment, professionals working with students with vision impairment must have a broad knowledge about the way the eyes work, the way that disease can affect the eyes, and how disease is medically managed. This paper helps the reader build such knowledge by presenting the anatomy and physiology of the eyes and visual system, a summary of visual development, and details about basic eye examination. An interpretation of the common clinical notations used by eye health professionals to record visual acuity, and a brief overview of the common eye conditions found in childhood are also presented.
