Abstract
The article interrogates the connection between the Chinese discourse of overseas development and the domestic stress on constructing civilization. It discusses entrepreneurial migration from China to other countries. It argues that the view of China as having taken up the torch of the global modernizing mission unites otherwise disparate groups. It discusses the role of international mobility in Chinese understandings of modernization.
