    Abstract

Experiments determining the onset of Bénard convection in a vertically magnetized ferrofluid were reported in the Third International Conference on Magnetic Fluids. This paper questions the satisfactory agreement claimed to exist between these experiments and the theoretical model of Finlayson which has been generalized by the present authors.
