UWB antenna for application in impulse radio regime

Abstract

In this paper suitability of an antenna for UWB communications is evaluated. The antenna under test is a proximity-fed circular patch antenna loaded with two rectangular slots surrounded by two concentrical rings. The antenna achieves a 10 dB return loss bandwidth from 2.95 to 9.2 GHz. To verify the potential of this antenna for UWB application its Mean Realized Gain (MRG) and System Fidelity Factor (SFF) is calculated. Its system-fidelity factors are calculated using CST Microwave Studio. The process of simulation for deriving SFF is explained in detail. The achieved SFF is greater than 86% for the antenna under test, which verifies its suitability for UWB communication. The MRG is computed using High-Frequency Structure Simulator (HFSS) through its entire bandwidth. The computed MRG verifies that the antenna's pattern shape and gain are maintained throughout the frequency band.
