Abstract
Pigeon pea refuges are half the size of cotton refuges because they can attract and produce twice the number of eggs and moths respectively as cotton refuges. We compared the refuges of 20 commercial farms in the Namoi/Gwydir valleys in the 2010/11 season. We found no difference in the number of eggs laid on pigeon pea and cotton commercial refuges, and that more moths emerged from the cotton refuges. In a concurrent experimental trail in the Namoi valley, the relationship between pigeon pea and cotton was as expected. How pigeon pea productivity on commercial farms could be improved is discussed.
