    Abstract

Reading through internet forums populated by Filipino metal fans, I notice a few recurring features. The enthusiasm for local 'Pinoy metal' scenes shines through. Older scene members bemoan the loss of their favourite clubs. Younger fans share the best sites to download the latest metal albums from around the world. Touring metal bands that that will never reach Filipino shores are discussed with equal parts longing and irritation. The common response to such scenic isolation is one simple question - 'Why not here?' - a question I will be unpacking in the course of this paper.
