    Abstract

Knowing that the work they are doing is worthwhile and has a sense of purpose is one of the best ways to motivate staff. This is according to research conducted by a unit of Macquarie University on over 1,000 organisations over a five year period. Employees also need to feel that their involvement in the workplace is valued and that they can feel as if they are participating in its future. Allied with this is a belief that the place they work for is going to be successful in the future, otherwise they may start looking for another job.
