Abstract

Studies of idiom comprehension are important to revealing the language functions of the right hemisphere(RH).Early studies found RH played a major role in idiom comprehension. However, recent studies showed the left hemisphere(LH) played a major role, while RH involved meaning selection. The hypotheses of brain mechanism of idiom processing include RH theory,Graded Salience Hypothesis(GSH) and meaning selection view. The features of western idioms and the paradigms use in the research contributed to the mechanism of meaning selection more than the meaning access.Further studies should pay attention to the special features of idioms and revealing the RH role in the figurative meaning access.
