Abstract

Yessie Mosby (b. 1982) is a Zenadh Kes Masig man, a Traditional Owner from the Kulkalgal Nation, Masig (Yorke) Island, Torres Strait Islands, Australia. He is an award-winning craftsman and artist with a passion for his sociocultural environment. Mosby and other artists of the Torres Strait Islands are well known for the creation of traditional masks and headdresses, an art Mosby learned from his great grand uncle on Masig. Named ‘dari’ in the eastern islands and ‘dhoeri’ (or dhoerri) in the west, the headdresses signify clan and island affiliations when used in ceremony and performance, as each clan has its own distinctive design.
