Abstract

While not exceptional as a premodern royal or elite woman wielding power and influence, Yolande of Aragon remains one of the most enigmatic of late medieval queens. She contrived to be everywhere and nowhere, operating seamlessly from backstage to front-of-house depending upon specific situational factors and contexts. She was shrewd, prudent, and intelligent—an éminence grise whose political and diplomatic agency secured the throne of France for her embattled son-in-law, Charles VII, and the survival and prosperity of her marital house.
