Abstract
Comprehensive analysis of the space-time manifestation and regional impacts of the Medieval Warm Period(MWP) can affect the recognition of driving forces of climate warming over the past century, and the objective understanding of historical status of 20th century warming. In this review,a number of results concerning this epoch in different regions of China were reconsidered, showing that the MWP actually exists in China, although with spatial differences and temporal fluctuations.Geological records and literature recordation reflected clearly that there was a distinct warm period in central-eastern China during 800—1300 AD.Although the performance of MWP in some areas of northwestern China was not obvious as that in eastern China, many studies about stalagmites, lake sediments and sand depositions also showed warm and humid climate during 500—1500 AD.Differences of the MWP were significant within the Tibetan plateau,in particular, the northeastern region of the plateau experienced distinct warming during 800—1100 AD,and the southern and the western during 1150—1400 AD and 1250—1500 AD,respectively.Solar and volcanic activities may be mainly responsible for the formation of the MWP in China, meanwhile its complicated time-space variations were increased by various natural conditions in China.
