Abstract
Previous studies have shown drug consumption to be a risk factor for increased suicidality among schizophrenics. We examined 207 paranoid schizophrenic patients with (n = 142) and without (n = 65) additional addiction disorder within a research project on comorbidity among psychiatric patients. Suicidal behavior was evaluated using a sociobiographical interview. Schizophrenics with an addiction disorder had a significantly higher rate of suicide plans and attempts in their previous history. There was a correlation between suicidal behavior, productive psychotic symptoms and the consumption of psychotropic substances. The data also shows an influence of psychotropic substances and hallucinations in the suicidal situation as an additional risk factor for severe suicide attempts with high autoaggressive tendency.
