Personal profile

Biography

Originally from Spain, I am a scholar of Translation Studies specialising in translator education, AI translation, translation technologies, and translation-specific information search. My professional trajectory began in technical translation and software localisation at iDisc Technologies in Barcelona, complemented by collaborations with international agencies such as STAR Servicios Lingüísticos and a range of European tech and commercial organisations.

My academic career commenced in 2005 at the University of Auckland, where I taught and researched until 2022, before joining the University of Vic – Central University of Catalonia as Senior Lecturer in Translation. In January 2024, I joined the Department of Linguistics at Macquarie University, where my work centres on the integration of emerging technologies—including AI and large language models—into translation. I am actively involved in national and international research networks and have delivered translation-technology workshops and research seminars at institutions such as the Universidad Internacional Menéndez Pelayo and the Universidad de Salamanca in Spain; the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey, California; and Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz in Germany.

I have taught widely across undergraduate and postgraduate programs, covering translation theory, specialised translation practice, AI-mediated and machine translation workflows, and empirical research methods. My commitment to pedagogical innovation and technology-enhanced learning has been recognised with two Teaching Excellence Awards from the University of Auckland.

My service to the profession includes previous roles such as Head of Department, PhD and Graduate Adviser, and NAATI Endorsement Coordinator. I maintain strong ties with industry and am deeply committed to cultural and linguistic diversity. As an academic consultant to New Zealand’s Language Assistance Services Programme, I contributed to aligning translator and interpreter certification processes with NAATI standards.

I pursue an active research agenda, with recognition including the University of Auckland’s Recognition Award for Outstanding Research (2018) and Faculty of Arts Research Award (2015). Outside academia, I am an avid rock-climber who enjoys spending time outdoors.
